The GClub at Riverwalk Trust offers three levels of enhanced membership to support our park initiatives:

~ GClub Trustee Membership

~ GClub Supporter Membership

~ GClub 100 Membership

Anyone can join our GClub Membership for a minimum annual contribution of $200, which includes Riverwalk Trust’s signature Riverwalk 100 membership. Existing Riverwalk Supporter members may upgrade to the GClub membership for a $250 annual contribution. We will be hosting monthly GClub Mixers starting spring.

The GClub Trustee Membership is our premier membership level. Riverwalk Trustee level members, Past Riverwalk Trust Chairs and Tribute Honorees received an invitation to join an inaugural group of founding trustee members. For an additional $500 annual contribution, existing Riverwalk Trustee level members will become a GClub Trustee. Joining at an annual $1000 contribution, new members will receive the Riverwalk Trustee level membership benefits in addition to GClub Trustee membership. Our Trustee mixer will be held at a member's home in the fall.

Friends of the GClub is our Facebook Initiative (with over 200 friends and counting) to keep everyone up to date on the latest news and accomplishments of The GClub at Riverwalk Trust. Although no membership is required, we encourage donations to support our GClub initiatives.

The Riverwalk Trust is partnering with local residents, local instructors and the City of Fort Lauderdale to activate our Riverwalk Park with programs ranging from wellness to cooking classes and downloadable tours.

A community center without walls, Riverwalk Park encourages serious play, work and mobility! Classes and meet-ups subject to change.

Go Riverwalk has sponsored Total Wellness to provide a class schedule held in Downtown Fort Lauderdale every day in Smoker Family Park, located at 501 S. New River Drive East Fort Lauderdale FL 33301.

Ali Hecht, the founder of Total Wellness Professionals is in charge of the launch! This is a great chance for anyone of any age to start Yoga or expand their existing practice! She has a wealth of knowledge regarding Yoga and other health and wellness topics that she has gained in the seven years she's been teaching. Total Wellness Professionals will help develop the consciousness of the people in South Florida who are looking to step up to the plate and stare natural healthcare in the eye! Riverwalk Trust hosts 'The Original' Riverwalk Mutts and Martinis Yappy Hour, Fort Lauderdale's largest outdoor, pet-friendly cocktail hour. The goal of the event is to bring together the Downtown community and their favorite four-legged friends for a night of celebration and networking while raising funds for the Riverwalk Trust. The event will be held along the Riverwalk at Briny Riverfront Pub.

This is the fifth Riverwalk Mutts and Martinis Yappy Hour, which has raised more than $57,000 for the Riverwalk Trust, a non-profit organization that serves as a catalyst in building and nurturing a vibrant community centered along the New River.

On this fun evening along Fort Lauderdale's Riverwalk, a $25 donation ($20 prepay online) gives attendees two complimentary drinks, appetizers, live music, silent auction, chances to win raffles and prizes and lots of fun treats and activities for their pets including dog massages, canine contests and doggie ice cream. Dog adoptions will be available courtesy of the Humane Society of Broward County, and a portion of the proceeds from each ticket sold will go towards the Humane Society of Broward County. Tickets may be purchased by clicking here or at the door the evening of the event.

On October 16, 2010 – the strut begins– with a stroll from Esplanade Park down Himmarshee Street and returning via the Riverwalk – a glorious stroll with lots of cheering watchers and a celebrity judging team to pick the winning team! There will be lots of merchants and goodies in the park and the event will conclude with the crowning of the "Queen" at America's Backyard.

Junior Achievement of South Florida’s Circle of Wise Women is hosting JA World Uncorked! on 10|30|10

Presented by Southern Wine and Spirits, this fundraising event will match some of the finest food establishments in South Florida with domestic and international wines and specialty drinks giving approximately 600 guests a mouth watering experience. JA World Uncorked! will showcase food, libations and entertainment in the new state-of-the-art 60,000 square foot facility, JA World Huizenga Center at Broward College. Join Lorraine Thomas, our Honorary Chair, and the Circle of Wise Women for an educational evening!

More than 55,000 students learn about finances, banking, commerce, jobs, and work and much more through the 25 programs offered by Junior Achievement. The Circle of Wise Women’s goal is to support these efforts. At JA World’s facility two experiential programs focused on 5th grade and 8th grade students. After extensive in-class, curriculum driven preparation, the students come for an onsite visit where they are an “adult” for a day. The 5th grade students work in JA BizTowns learning to run a business and 8th grade students learn personal financial responsibility and budgeting; skills that every student should know to become a successful adult.

Riverwalk Trust will again host Riverwalk Get Downtown, Fort Lauderdale's largest outdoor cocktail hour, offering the best Flavors of Fort Lauderdale with food samples from local restaurants and bars in the Plaza at Las Olas, 333 E. Las Olas Blvd on Friday, April 9, 2010. Get Downtown will partner with YOLO restaurant, also located in the same plaza.

The Riverwalk Trust will honor M. Austin Forman for his outstanding contributions to the Riverwalk and greater Downtown community on Thursday, March 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Timpano Chophouse & Martini Bar. Honored guests, sponsors and special ticket holders will gather for a VIP cocktail reception, beginning at 5 p.m. Exquisite food, sensational spirits and festive entertainment will delight approximately 350 guests as they mingle at Riverwalk Trust’s signature annual social event. Attendees will enjoy cocktails courtesy of Premier Beverage, delight in tasty hors d’oeuvres from Timpano Chophouse & Martini Bar and enjoy music from a live band.

Forman was greatly involved in the inception of Fort Lauderdale’s Riverwalk and the Arts & Entertainment District. He served on the General Obligation Bond committee that developed a bond issue to make Fort Lauderdale the best city of its size by 1994. Out of that committee came the development of the Riverwalk and the Arts, Entertainment and Science District including the Broward Center for the Performing Arts and the Museum of Discovery and Science. Forman is currently a real estate developer and still serves on the museum board. He is also board chairman of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

The Riverwalk Tribute will assist the Riverwalk Trust in its efforts to promote, enhance and beautify the Riverwalk community. The cost for the event is $150 for individuals ($200 with VIP reception) and $125 for members ($175 with VIP) of the Riverwalk Trust at the Riverwalk 100 level or higher. The Leadership Broward team of Class XXVIII, will make its first mark on the Riverwalk Park by implementing the GClub’s Inaugural Potted Planter Project on Saturday, February 13, 2010.

“In an effort to beautify the Riverwalk Park, our team enthusiastically chose to bring this project to fruition and add 25 potted planters along the Riverwalk,” said Drew Saito, Chair of the Leadership Broward team. The team has secured an in kind donation from 100% Landscaping for all of the soil! Board Member, Andrew Lester from the Continental Group is also donating a portion of the plants that will bring the pots and the Riverwalk Park to life. “We are really looking forward to implementing this project, improving the aesthetics of the Riverwalk Park and contributing to the overall sustainability of Ft. Lauderdale,” said team Co-Chair Shawn Sackman.

Members from the Riverwalk Trust and the Leadership Broward team will be joined by Genia Duncan Ellis and the Citizen's Volunteer Corp to plant and place the pots along the Riverwalk on February 13, 2010; a day that will surely plant seeds for the betterment of our community.

The Riverwalk Trust is pleased to announce the Tenth Annual Riverwalk Trust Tribute honoring M. Austin Forman for his role in the growth and development of Riverwalk Park and the Downtown community. Funds raised through the event will assist our organization in its ongoing pursuit of building and nurturing a vibrant community in Downtown Fort Lauderdale.

This distinctive and casual event will take place on Thursday, March 25, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Exquisite food, sensational spirits and festive entertainment will delight approximately 350+ of Fort Lauderdale’s elite as they mingle at Timpano Chophouse & Martini Bar. Riverwalk Trust & Leadership Broward join forces to implement The GClub's Inaugural Potted Planter Project

Go green and promote our natural waterway. Go beautiful and install custom clay potted planters. Go Downtown and support our Riverwalk Park.

These are the grassroot foundations of The GClub, dedicated to the greening of our Riverwalk Park and the creation of a more sustainable, more grounded downtown lifestyle.

The GClub serves as the launch pad for an ongoing series of projects and the inaugural project will be the installation of decorative clay pots throughout the park, spilling over with lush, tropical flowers and trees.

A matching grant for $22,500 was secured for the project through the City of Fort Lauderdale’s Business Capital Improvement Program (BCIP)
Bob Dugan, and EDSA donated $10,000 in-kind services to get this project off the ground.
Terry Rynard, The City of Fort Lauderdale Parks & Recreation, will oversee the installation and maintenance of the potted planters.

Leadership Broward will be the project team assigned specific tasks to accomplish the goals of the grant and to achieve credit for the development and implementation of the project. They will assist with planter location, definition of the plants and assist in obtaining donated trees, plant material, soils, fertilizer and the like for the initial plantings. Watch for updates! The juried art exhibit, presented by LXR Luxury Resorts & Hotels, showcases artists from throughout the state and the artists’ personal interpretations of “Florida.” All guests and participating artists are invited to cast votes for their favorite artist in the exhibition. The artist receiving the highest number of votes will receive the People’s Choice Award, awarded that evening. All of the artwork in the Impressions of Florida competition will be available for sale with 50% of the proceeds benefiting Bonnet House Museum & Gardens. Light Up Lauderdale, presented by the Riverwalk Trust in association with the City of Fort Lauderdale, is one of the most unique holiday celebrations in the United States, with its promenade of light displays along the Riverwalk Park and rich menu of activities throughout downtown. Highlighting the city’s one-of-a-kind tropical backdrop, the annual program kicks off November 19 with Riverwalk Trust's Light Up Lauderdale Get Lit Party and is scheduled to run through the end of January 2010.

“We have a unique combination of great weather and architecture, a beautiful waterfront setting, upscale retail, entertainment and public landscape, all working together to provide the perfect setting for exquisite holiday lighting,” said Tom Vogel, chairman, Riverwalk Trust.

In its third year, this free-to-the-public holiday spectacular showcases the mile-long brick Riverwalk pathway in Downtown Fort Lauderdale, giving residents and workers alike opportunities to enjoy the beautiful city center. The area is adorned with lighted trees, garland-wrapped poles and sponsored displays along both sides of the New River, stretching from Federal Highway to the Marshall’s Bridge (SW 4th/ 7th Avenue).

“Light Up Lauderdale shines the spotlight on the New River, one of our City’s enduring treasures,” said Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler. “We’re pleased to join the Riverwalk Trust in inviting the entire community to experience the lights along the Riverwalk Park. Riverwalk Trust’s Light Up Lauderdale has quickly become a holiday tradition, adding vitality and economic growth in the downtown area,” he added.

Visitors strolling along the Riverwalk during Light Up Lauderdale will enjoy creative light displays, including Santa on a boat, flamingos in the park and curious crabs creeping under historic bridges -- all designed by Brandano Displays, the firm that created the popular light show at Tradewinds Park in Pompano Beach.

“Light Up Lauderdale is an official Winterfest sanctioned event, and we’re adding extra activities this year to provide even more reasons to come see the lights and enjoy downtown,” Vogel said. Developers, architects, contractors helping new program rescue unwanted trees

from construction sites, for transplanting to public parks

A new “matchmaking service for trees” marked its successful launch this month, as the Riverwalk Trust Tree Harmony program saved 14 massive coconut palms from destruction – and transplanted them to create an instant tree canopy along a sunny stretch of the Riverwalk Park in Fort Lauderdale’s downtown.

A “green” program of the Riverwalk Trust in partnership with the City of Fort Lauderdale, Riverwalk Trust Tree Harmony is dedicated to saving trees on privately-owned properties that would otherwise be lost, by transplanting them in the Riverwalk Park and other local public spaces.

“Riverwalk Trust Tree Harmony has real potential as a model for communities striving to conserve trees for public benefit,” said Phil Thornburg, the City’s director of parks and recreation, one of the program’s leaders. “We’re working to create an ongoing network of developers, architects, planners, contractors and individual residents who will encourage donation of trees from construction sites.

The Riverwalk Trust Tree Harmony initiative matches healthy, donated trees with receptor sites and guides donors in preparing trees for transport, obtaining permits, moving trees to the new location and replanting. Donors bear the cost of removing and transporting trees, and City crews receive and replant them. “An amazing group of volunteers pooled their talents to create Riverwalk Trust Tree Harmony as a sustainable, long-term community initiative,” said Scott Strawbridge, Riverwalk Trust board member who, with committee member Kathy Schauer, envisioned the program. “The goals are replacing trees along the Riverwalk that were lost to disease or other natural causes, saving established trees at development sites from an untimely death – and enhancing the shade canopy for Riverwalk,” Strawbridge added.

Donor A1A Clipper, LLC had been preparing to remove the 14 palms from its beachfront hotel property, where construction is underway to transform the former Yankee Clipper Hotel to the soon-to-open Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Beach Hotel. “When our landscape design consultant EDSA brought the Riverwalk Trust Tree Harmony program to our attention, we were delighted that established trees up to 50 feet tall could find a new home instead of being destroyed,” said Robert Geimer, senior vice president, Starwood Capital Group Global.

Transplanting the massive trees was an exercise in precision. Within 36 hours, A1A Clipper’s contractor removed and transported the trees on a flatbed truck, and the City’s landscape crews replanted them along a 130-foot stretch of Riverwalk Park behind the Broward County Courthouse.

The location was far from arbitrary. Months ago, as Riverwalk Trust Tree Harmony began to take shape, the City’s Urban Forester Gene Dempsey and Chief Horticulturalist Jim Romeo surveyed the mile-long Riverwalk Park, using GPS technology to pinpoint locations where different tree species can thrive. That plan has in turn already been aligned with the Riverwalk District Arts & Entertainment Public Realm Plan that expert national design consultants are now formulating for the Riverwalk area.

“Initially, trees are being transplanted to the Riverwalk Park,” Thornburg explained. “As the program grows, it can add lasting beauty and shade to many of our public spaces.“ For information on Riverwalk Trust Tree Harmony, visit www.goriverwalk.com

Riverwalk Trust Supports Riverwalk Park Enhancements. Vision for Park is Backed by Immediate Plans for Improvements

This past year, the Riverwalk Trust has been extremely involved with the passage of and now involvement in the Riverwalk District Arts & Entertainment / Public Realm Plan, a major consultant's study passed by the City of Fort Lauderdale commission this past spring. The name of the study is long, but the concept is simple: how do we make the Riverwalk District a more active, compelling destination for residents and visitors?
What we like about the direction of this plan is the commission's directive that we develop immediately implementable actions that don't require huge amounts of capital to jumpstart. We could approach the plan with grandiose ideas for a park redesign, but so many agree that we have a fabulous place in the Riverwalk already. We just need some physical tweaks here and there and much more emphasis on making it an active public space that becomes intertwined with the community's daily life. In fact, the Riverwalk Trust began this process on a small, grassroots scale this past year with the @ Riverwalk program, offering free community yoga every Saturday at 10 a.m. under the Esplanade Pavilion. It's been a huge success.

The project team for this study is multidisciplinary with members having expertise in many areas including parks master planning, landscape design, arts and public space programming, public art and media, parks management and operations, and cultural district planning. Beyer Blinder Belle (BBB), the lead consultant, has eloquently stated, "… the city and specifically the areas surrounding the New River are poised to achieve a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. All of the ingredients are in place: a publicly accessible waterfront; outstanding arts and entertainment destinations; successful retail corridors; a critical mass of Downtown population from recent housing and commercial developments and future development potential. However, while individually successful, these assets are not yet interconnected in a way that causes the Downtown as a whole to match the vibrancy of other successful urban centers."

Fort Lauderdale Historical Society mourns the loss of Robert Bruce “Buddy” Lochrie II, founding member of the Society

The Fort Lauderdale Historical Society mourns the loss of Robert Bruce “Buddy” Lochrie, II, community leader and a founding and lifetime member of the Society on February 23, 1962. Buddy died on Friday, August 7, 2009.

Buddy served as a member and chairman of the Performing Arts Center Authority during construction of the Center, and as chairman of the Performing Arts Foundation. A founding member of the Broward Workshop, Buddy was also a Trustee of the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation, preserver of the Bonnet House and Gardens.

Nearly six years ago, on October 7, 2003, Buddy participated in a panel discussion at the Society’s History Makers Lunchtime Lecture Series on the historic Hotels of Fort Lauderdale. Buddy spoke on the Broward Hotel, an early downtown hotel owned by his grandfather, John, during the 1920s until 1943. He recalled that “all of the Lochries loved to fish, even the women.” But the women did not want the fish mounted in their homes, so they had them displayed in the Hotel Broward’s public spaces.

On November 8, 2003, the Society honored Buddy and Susan at the Society’s 10th Annual Founders Dinner. The Fort Lauderdale City Commission named Buddy 2004 Distinguished Citizen. The Broward County Commission twice designated two different days as Robert B. “Buddy” Lochrie Day, the only person known to this author to be so recognized, for his service to the community. Susan and Buddy were among the first to join as Villagers of the Society. In October 2008, the Broward County Historical Commission honored Buddy as one of the County’s Pioneers.

Buddy will be remembered as a member of a pioneer family who built helped bridge Fort Lauderdale’s past with its future to make Fort Lauderdale a better place. Buddy’s links to the past and his substantial community service over the past seven decades helped transform what was once a small, provincial town barely 22 years old and a population of only 8,666 when Buddy was born, to today’s diverse, international community of more than 180,000 from every part of the world and every walk of life. Today, Fort Lauderdale’s residents make their homes in more than 60 distinct neighborhoods. Today, both residents and visitors alike enjoy a major performing arts center as well as enriching arts, science, and history museums, and a wide array of cultural and recreational activities. With one foot rooted firmly in the past and the other planted firmly in the future, Buddy’s vision, commitment and community service in making Fort Lauderdale a better place in which to live and work will long be remembered.

The G Club at Riverwalk Trust offers three levels of membership to support our initiatives: G Club Trustee, G Club Supporter and Friends of the G Club.

Friends of the G Club is our Facebook Initiative (with 200+ friends and counting) to keep everyone up to date on the latest news and accomplishments of The G Club at Riverwalk Trust. Although no membership is required, we encourage donations to support our G Club initiatives like the Adopt-a-Pot program coming soon!

Anyone can join our G Club Supporter Membership for a minimum annual contribution of $350, which includes Riverwalk Trust’s signature Riverwalk 100 membership. Existing Riverwalk 100 and Corporate Supporter members may upgrade to the G Club membership for a $250 annual contribution.

The G Club Trustee is our premier membership level. Existing Riverwalk Trustee level members, Past Riverwalk Trust Chairs and Tribute Honorees will receive an invitation to join an inaugural group of founding trustee members. All members that join by the end of the summer will be invited to an exclusive trustee reception in the fall. For an additional $500 annual contribution, existing Riverwalk Trustee level members will become a G Club Trustee. Dedicated to the greening of our Riverwalk Park and the creation of a more sustainable, more grounded downtown lifestyle, The G Club at Riverwalk Trust will serve as the launch pad for an on-going series of projects.

G Club is GO! GO Green, GO Downtown, GO Riverwalk!

The G Club at Riverwalk Trust is a legacy project developed by former chair of the Riverwalk Trust and BNYMellon Vice President, Renée Quinn. "As a past Chair, I wanted to take on a meaningful project that would make both a visual and tangible impact on the heart of our downtown, the Riverwalk Park. By bringing together Riverwalk Trust's past chairs and tribute honorees with community leaders and residents, we can tap into years of experience and commitment. It is our responsibility to give back to our 'Central Park' that we call Riverwalk."

The inaugural project of the The G Club at Riverwalk Trust is the installation of decorative clay pots throughout the park, spilling over with lush, tropical flowers and trees. A matching grant for $22,500 was secured for the project through the City of Fort Lauderdale’s Business Capital Improvement Program. “The installation of the pots is a way to beautify the Riverwalk and enhance the pedestrian experience of visitors to the park,” said Quinn. Another benefit of the project is a visual cue to the community that there is a vested group caring for the park. Riverwalk Trust, partnering with the City of Fort Lauderdale Parks & Recreation Department, has been running a test project in Esplanade Park for several months.

G Club members will also have an opportunity to “Adopt-A-Pot” along Riverwalk Park. Events for the group will include membership gatherings, exclusive wine dinners for G Club Trustees and a signature event called Barefoot in the Park, A Wine and Music Festival planned for the fall of 2010, sponsored by Premier Beverage.

Riverwalk District Arts & Entertainment / Public Realm Plan Passes

Thanks to a visionary new City Commission, the Riverwalk District A & E/Public Realm Plan recently passed. The plan is a mouthful, and it has quite a few aspects to it. The consultant chosen is Beyer Blinder Belle, architects of the Downtown Master Plan and the Downtown New River Master Plan. In our multiple interactions with them over the years, we've seen great enthusiasm and vision from this team - they understand the great potential of the Riverwalk Park as a vibrant waterfront destination.

Here are some excerpts from the City's White Paper Summary of this plan:

* This plan will help create an extraordinary urban downtown waterfront environment, by outlining an immediate actionable strategy to promote cultural arts development and improve the public spaces that make up the Riverwalk District.

* This plan will create preliminary designs for the parks, open spaces and streetscapes within the Riverwalk District to ensure the public spaces in Downtown Fort Lauderdale are some of the best in the nation and world.

* This plan will conduct feasibility and cost estimates and identify funding opportunities to pay for public improvements. Cost estimates will assist in producing an implementable capital investment program for the improvement of public spaces throughout the district.
* This plan will detail programming and planning efforts to activate these public spaces, providing for easily implemented, short-term actions including event planning, improved signage and marketing and promotion of the Riverwalk District to the public.

* This plan will specify a strategy to strengthen and expand the arts, entertainment and cultural amenities in Downtown Fort Lauderdale and promote these uses as a key economic development tool to strengthen the core of the Downtown area and ensure its continued sustainability. In addition, a market study will be completed to quantify these economic benefits.

The Riverwalk Trust will be extremely involved in this study, and we'll bring you news and information as it emerges through this process. In fact, we already started last fall in working to activate Riverwalk through our @ Riverwalk programs. It's our implementation of the idea that Riverwalk Park is an incredible outdoor community rec center without walls. We are confident that our investment in these activities and experimentation will prove valuable in the City's planning process.
